Xī bān yá hé tái wān de chéng shì jiē jǐng

City Streets of Spain v. Taiwan
Why is it always novel to go abroad? Freshness may come from small details, such as a street view. For example, street signs in Taiwan are mostly green, but the Spanish capital, Madrid, features a special kind of street signs made of decorative ceramic tiles. The tile street signs usually appear on corner walls, adorned with paintings corresponding to the road names. Our Corpus cultural observer in Madrid likes to travel through the streets and discover tile paintings. Some places even sell them as souvenirs!
Another feature of Spanish cities is that there is always a square around the corner, where many Spanish people drink and chat on holidays. As for the capital of Taiwan, Taipei, the squares are replaced by ubiquitous convenience stores. What’s more, they are open 24 hours! Convenience stores are an indispensable part of Taiwanese life, where local people can complete a myriad of errands, such as purchasing tickets for exhibitions and transportation, photocopying, dropping off or picking up deliveries and making payment.
Hand-cranked beverage stores are also an important element of Taiwan’s urban streetscape. The density is probably second only to that of the convenience stores. Almost everyone on the street holds a cup of bubble tea. Of course, the most representative drink of Taiwan is the famous pearl milk tea! When you are peckish, in addition to convenience stores and beverage stores, you can also stop by a roadside stall and indulge yourself with a bag of traditional Taiwanese egg cake. There is something to eat anytime, anywhere in Taiwan. It is indeed a “gourmet kingdom,” where no one can leave without putting on a few pounds!
