Tái wān yǔ yīng guó jiā zhǎng men duì hái zi de xiǎng fǎ bù tóng?
一年前正值申请大学时期，大家都在为要去哪一所大学读哪一门科系烦恼着，每天午休时间的聊天话题不外乎就是关于大学的申请与未来的计画。申请大学对每个人来说是个重大的抉择，大部分的同学都会与父母讨论后才做决定，当同学们分享他们父母的看法时，才发现英国和台湾父母的想法恰恰相反呢!
Yī nián qián zhèng zhí shēn qǐng dà xué shí qí, dà jiā dōu zài wèi yào qù nǎ yī suǒ dà xué dú nǎ yī mén kē xì fán nǎo zhe, měi tiān wǔ xiū shí jiān de liáo tiān huà tí bù wài hū jiù shì guān yú dà xué de shēn qǐng yǔ wèi lái de jì huà. Shēn qǐng dà xué duì měi gè rén lái shuō shì gè zhòng dà de jué zé, dà bù fèn de tóng xué dōu huì yǔ fù mǔ tǎo lùn hòu cái zuò jué dìng, dāng tóng xué men fēn xiǎng tā men fù mǔ de kàn fǎ shí, cái fā xiàn yīng guó hé tái wān fù mǔ de xiǎng fǎ qià qià xiāng fǎn ne!
在台湾，每位父母都希望自己的孩子是最亮眼的、不输在起跑点上，更愿意为孩子支付课外的补习费用。既然付出了高额的补习费，父母当然会希望自己的孩子们可以上名牌大学，将来找一份有稳定收入的工作。相反地，英国的父母主要以孩子们的选择作为优先考量，再给予一些适当的建议，而「学校的排名」并非最重要的。因此，当我们在填志愿时，可以看出亚洲学生主要申请医学、商科科系，而英国同学申请的科系范围很大，例如:马术管理、戏剧、健康与社会保健。当然，这些仅仅是大多数父母的做法，也有许多不同的方式，但都是对孩子们的未来有所期待的。

Do Taiwanese and British Parents Think Differently About Their Children’s Future?
A year ago, everyone around me was worried about which university I should attend and what courses I should apply during the application period. My classmates were also discussing university applications and their future plans during the lunch break every day. Applying to university is a vital decision for everyone, and most students will make their decision after discussing with their parents. When my classmates share their parents’ views, I realise that British and Taiwanese parents have completely different perspectives!
In Taiwan, parents hope that their children are the most outstanding ones and don’t lose on the starting line. They are more than willing to pay extra tutoring fees for their children. As they are paying a large amount of money, parents will want to see their children go to a prestigious university or college and land a job with stable incomes in the future. On the other hand, British parents give priority to children’s interests over ‘the ranking,’ and tend to give suggestions only when necessary. Therefore, when Asian students are choosing university majors, it can be noticed that we mainly apply for medicine or business, whereas British students apply for courses with a much wider range, such as equestrian management, drama, health and social care. I am merely describing the majority of the parents, but there are still many other parents that opt for different parenting styles. Whichever way they take, they simply want a brighter future for their children.
