What is the official language in Taiwan?
According to a census in 2011, people who speak English and Welsh as their main languages account for 92.3% of the population in the UK. Meanwhile, there are many immigrants in the UK, so it is common to hear multinational languages in the street, such as Polish, Indian or Chinese.
‘What is the official language in Taiwan?’ This is a question that I have been asked many times, and many foreigners are curious when I introduce Taiwan to them. In fact, Taiwanese people use various languages. According to the census, 83.5% of the people mainly use Mandarin in their daily communication. However, 81.9%, 6.6% and 1.4% of the population can also speak Taiwanese (Min-Nan), Hakka and Austronesian languages respectively.
Mandarin, Taiwanese (Min-Nan) and Hakka are parts of Sino-Tibetan languages, and they are widely used across Taiwan. Many families in Taiwan still use these languages for communication. In addition, although we mainly use Mandarin to learn or communicate in schools or firms, teachers and students often make jokes by using Taiwanese or Hakka in schools in order to make the classes more interesting. On the other hand, the Austronesian languages, which could be identified as the first languages that appeared in Taiwan, are mostly used by Austronesian peoples (which are the aborigines in Taiwan).
