    Improving Your Mandarin through Reading

“Why is Mandarin so difficult?” This is a question that often pops up in Mandarin learners’ heads. An important reason is that the culture is too far away from learners’ own cultures, with fundamentally distinct core concepts and customs. Language and culture cannot be separated, this is not a foreign notion to learners. However, how exactly can Mandarin learners bridge the divide before giving in to the frustration? Believe it or not, reading is an effective way to lift the spirits along the way.

Some people think that reading is an advanced skill that one acquires at a later stage of language learning. That’s not necessarily true. Learners can actually benefit from reading in the beginning, if they know how to choose the right material. As an English learner, I started with children books, the kind that has as many pictures as possible. I can assure you, the pride of finishing a book in a foreign language is very addictive, even if it’s a short one. Another safe way is to start with graded readers. A book that you’ve read in your native language is also a good way to “cheat.”  If you are up for some challenges, you can get your hands on abridged version of classic novels.

When it comes to reading literature, contemporary works and classical canon are equally important. Classics help you quickly accumulate the cultural background and references of Mandarin, while reading contemporary works helps you understand current cultural trends in Mandarin-speaking world.

The length is also an important factor. To develop good reading skills, and by extension all language skills, you should read short essays as well as novels. In essays, you can learn how to use concise language to express opinions effectively, while novels provide you with great examples of descriptive language for giving information.

A good place to start with is the magazine on Corpus Mandarin, where you can find a great deal of articles in both Mandarin and English, sometimes even Spanish. They focus on a wide range of topics, from global outlook to Taiwanese and other Asian cultures. Whichever type of text you choose, make sure it intrigues you and guarantee an enjoyable, rewarding experience, despite the effort it takes!
