    🧠【Critical Thinking x English Exams】How Does It Appear in Singapore Primary English Assessments?

    Based on MOE’s English language syllabus, critical thinking has become a core ability assessed in primary school English exams, especially in the PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination).

    The latest 2025 PSLE English tests are not only about vocabulary or grammar. Instead, students are expected to:

    1. Interpret and analyse information
    2. Make logical inferences
    3. Express reasoned opinions

    So how exactly does critical thinking show up in exam questions?

    📘 Example 1: Visual Text Comprehension
    Students are presented with an image such as a poster, flyer or notice and must answer questions based on it.

    📝 Sample Question:
    Poster: Library’s summer reading programme
    Question:

    “Which group of children would benefit the most from this programme?”
    “Why might a parent choose this event over another?”

    ✅ Critical Thinking Applied:
    Students must analyse and evaluate the content—such as age limits, timing, and benefits—before identifying who it best serves. It’s not just about locating text; it’s about interpreting meaning.

    📕 Example 2: Open-ended Comprehension
    These questions require students to interpret characters’ motivations or predict future outcomes based on a reading passage.

    📝 Sample Question:
    A passage describes a boy who did poorly in an exam and talks to his parents.

    “Do you think the boy will change his study habits after this incident? Why or why not?”

    ✅ Critical Thinking Applied:
    Students must infer the boy’s mindset based on the story’s details, then justify their answer using evidence from the text. This involves empathy, logic and reasoning.

    📗 Example 3: Composition Writing
    Students write a story or reflection in response to a prompt.

    📝 Sample Prompt:
    Write about a time you helped someone and how that made you feel.

    ✅ Critical Thinking Applied:
    Writing requires planning, cause-effect reasoning and emotional reflection.

    Students need to build a structured narrative while connecting actions with insights and emotions.

    根據新加坡教育部2020的小學英語課綱,培養學生的思維能力(critical thinking)已經是許多英語考試的核心要求。
    Gēnjù xīnjiāpō jiàoyù bù 2020 de xiǎoxué yīngyǔ kè gāng, péiyǎng xuéshēng de sīwéi nénglì (critical thinking) yǐjīng shì xǔduō yīngyǔ kǎoshì de héxīn yāoqiú.

    尤其是在最新的2025 PSLE小六會考中,英語科目的題型早已不只是“會背單詞、會做語法”,而是更註重:
    Yóuqí shì zài zuìxīn de 2025 PSLE xiǎo liù huìkǎo zhōng, yīngyǔ kēmù dì tí xíng zǎoyǐ bùzhǐshì “huì bèi dāncí, huì zuò yǔfǎ”, ér shì gèng zhùzhòng:

    1. 分析理解信息的能力
    2. 推理判斷能力
    3. 用英語清晰表達觀點和情感的能力

    1. Fēnxī lǐjiě xìnxī de nénglì
    2. Tuīlǐ pànduàn nénglì
    3. Yòng yīngyǔ qīngxī biǎodá guāndiǎn hé qínggǎn de nénglì

    Nà zuòwéi jiāzhǎng, wǒmen gāi rúhé lǐjiě “sīwéi nénglì” zài kǎoshì zhōng de jùtǐ biǎoxiàn ne?

    📘 示例一:圖文理解題(Visual Text)
    這類題目給出一張海報或廣告,讓孩子根據內容回答問題。

    📘 Shìlì yī: Tú wén lǐjiě tí (Visual Text)
    Zhè lèi tímù gěi chū yī zhāng hǎibào huò guǎnggào, ràng háizǐ gēnjù nèiróng huídá wèntí.

    📝 例題:
    內容是一張圖書館夏令營的海報。
    問題可能是:

    📝 Lìtí:
    Nèiróng shì yī zhāng túshū guǎn xiàlìngyíng dì hǎibào.
    Wèntí kěnéng shì:

    “哪類孩子最適合參加這個活動?”
    “為什麽家長可能會選擇這個活動而不是其他的?”

    “Nǎ lèi háizǐ zuì shìhé cānjiā zhège huódòng?”
    “Wèishéme jiā cháng kěnéng huì xuǎnzé zhège huódòng ér bùshì qítā de?”

    ✅ 思維能力體現:
    孩子需要綜合判斷時間、年齡要求、活動內容等信息,去思考“誰最適合”,而不是只從表面找關鍵詞。

    ✅ Sīwéi nénglì tǐxiàn:
    Háizǐ xūyào zònghé pànduàn shíjiān, niánlíng yāoqiú, huódòng nèiróng děng xìnxī, qù sīkǎo “shéi zuì shìhé”, ér bùshì zhǐ cóng biǎomiàn zhǎo guānjiàn cí.

    📕 示例二:開放式閱讀理解(Open-ended Comprehension)
    這類題目需要孩子讀一篇文章後,表達自己的理解和判斷。

    📕 Shìlì èr: Kāifàng shì yuèdú lǐjiě (Open-ended Comprehension)
    Zhè lèi tímù xūyào háizǐ dú yī piān wénzhāng hòu, biǎodá zìjǐ de lǐjiě hé pànduàn.

    📝 例題:
    一篇短文講述一個男孩考試失敗後和父母的對話。
    問題是:

    📝 Lìtí:
    Yī piān duǎnwén jiǎngshù yīgè nánhái kǎoshì shībài hòu hé fùmǔ de duìhuà.
    Wèntí shì:

    “你認為這個男孩之後會改變他的學習方式嗎?為什麽?”
    “Nǐ rènwéi zhège nánhái zhīhòu huì gǎibiàn tā de xuéxí fāngshì ma? Wèishéme?”

    ✅ 思維能力體現:
    孩子要從語句中“讀出”角色的情緒、態度和心理變化,並且用自己的語言加以分析說明。

    ✅ Sīwéi nénglì tǐxiàn:
    Háizǐ yào cóng yǔjù zhōng “dú chū” juésè de qíngxù, tàidù hé xīnlǐ biànhuà, bìngqiě yòng zìjǐ de yǔyán jiāyǐ fēnxī shuōmíng.

    📗 示例三:英語作文(Composition Writing)
    通常給一個題目,讓學生寫一篇完整的故事或反思文。

    📗 Shìlì sān: Yīngyǔ zuòwén (Composition Writing)
    Tōngcháng gěi yīgè tímù, ràng xuéshēng xiě yī piān wánzhěng de gùshì huò fǎnsī wén.

    📝 例題:
    寫一件你曾經幫助別人的事情,並說說你的感受。

    📝 Lìtí:
    Xiě yī jiàn nǐ céngjīng bāngzhù biérén de shìqíng, bìng shuō shuō nǐ de gǎnshòu.

    ✅ 思維能力體現:
    孩子需要有清晰的思路、時間順序、人物安排,還要能表達出幫助他人之後的感受與成長。寫作文其實就是一次“用英語表達思維”的過程。

    ✅ Sīwéi nénglì tǐxiàn:
    Háizǐ xūyào yǒu qīngxī de sīlù, shíjiān shùnxù, rénwù ānpái, hái yào néng biǎodá chū bāngzhù tārén zhīhòu de gǎnshòu yǔ chéngzhǎng. Xiě zuòwén qíshí jiùshì yīcì “yòng yīngyǔ biǎodá sīwéi” de guòchéng.
