‘Why do I struggle to understand English reading passages?‘

This week marks the first #midterm exams for junior and senior high schools in Taiwan while #Singapore 🇸🇬 and #NewZealand 🇳🇿 primary and secondary students will face their #finalexams in two weeks.

Today, let’s talk about this common question:
‘When #Englishreading feels difficult, what’s really the problem?’

    1️⃣ Limited Vocabulary Range

It’s not just about knowing individual words but also collocations, idioms and multiple meanings.
A single word can change meaning depending on its part of speech or context.

2️⃣ Limited Real-world Experience or Exposure

This was Amy’s main struggle as a student!
Growing up and studying in the suburbs before high school, I didn’t have much exposure or training in critical or contextual thinking, only in memorising the ‘right’ answers.

When I studied at a high school in Taipei, I suddenly realised I didn’t even know how to access the same current affairs or global topics that my classmates and teachers discussed.

This shows how much educational environment and access to resources can shape one’s learning horizon.

3️⃣ Weak Connection and Organisation Skills

In writing, English texts often follow fixed structures and logical patterns depending on the genre.
By ‘intentionally’ reading widely across genres, learners can develop a stronger sense of how ideas are linked and organised, which makes it easier to identify key points quickly.

✨ Wishing everyone success in your midterm and final exams!

    1. 字彙量不夠完整
    不單單是單字、還有搭配詞、片語、一字多義,換個詞性意思又不同。

    1. Zìhuì liàng bùgòu wánzhěng
Bù dāndān shì dānzì, hái yǒu dāpèi cí, piàn yǔ, yī zì duōyì, huàngè cíxìng yìsi yòu bùtóng.

    2. 經驗不足,平時沒有拓展視野的訓練
    Amy顧問 小時候是這個問題居多!高中以前在郊區唸書,沒有太多延伸思考的訓練,只知道刷題背正確答案。

    2. Jīngyàn bùzú, píngshí méiyǒu tàzhǎn shìyě de xùnliàn
Amy gùwèn xiǎoshíhòu shì zhège wèntí jūduō! Gāozhōng yǐqián zài jiāoqū niànshū, méiyǒu tài duō yánshēn sīkǎo de xùnliàn, zhǐ zhīdào shuā tí bèi zhèngquè dá’àn.

    高中到了台北讀書,才驚覺不知道要經由什麼管道才能跟上同學老師們的最新時事話題。
Gāozhōng dàole táiběi dúshū, cái jīng jué bù zhīdào yào jīngyóu shénme guǎndào cáinéng gēn shàng tóngxué lǎoshīmen de zuìxīn shíshì huàtí.

    可見教育資源與環境對視野的拓展有極大的影響。
Kějiàn jiàoyù zīyuán yǔ huánjìng duì shìyě de tàzhǎn yǒu jídà de yǐngxiǎng.

    3. 連結、組織能力較弱
    從寫作結構上看,英文文章依文體,有固定的寫作邏輯。因此 「刻意地」廣泛閱讀不同文體,也可以熟悉連結與組織文意的技巧,更快抓到重點。

    3. Liánjié, zǔzhī nénglì jiào ruò
Cóng xiězuò jiégòu shàng kàn, yīngwén wénzhāng yī wéntǐ, yǒu gùdìng de xiězuò luójí. Yīncǐ `kèyì dì’guǎngfàn yuèdú bùtóng wéntǐ, yě kěyǐ shúxī liánjié yǔ zǔzhī wén yì de jìqiǎo, gèng kuài zhuā dào zhòngdiǎn.
