Managing ‘Time’ is one of the most powerful tools in Learning Facilitation!

A business owner recently asked Consultant Amy: ‘Why is it that a task requiring only five minutes a day ends up being dragged out until the very last minute by most colleagues?’

This is likely #ParkinsonsLaw at play:

‘Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.’

Have you ever experienced this? You have a workload that should only take two hours, but because you have the whole day to do it, it ends up taking the entire day. Why does giving yourself more time often result in lower efficiency?

When upskilling teams or introducing new languages, we often fall into a trap: ‘I’ll set aside a nice, comfortable four hours this weekend to study.’ Or, ‘You just need to find five minutes within your eight-hour workday to practice using AI.’

For enterprises, time is the most expensive resource. And in the AI era, focus is the scarcest commodity.

Too much leeway = The brain enters ‘power-saving mode’. Focus scatters, and we become prone to distraction.

Conversely, moderate time pressure forces the brain into a state of ‘high cognitive bandwidth’. When the brain realises a resource (time) is scarce, it automatically filters out noise and prioritises core information.

This is why, when conducting Learning Facilitation, Consultant Amy masters the art of ‘pace and tempo’, creating a sense of ‘Artificial Urgency’.

How can you harness ‘The Power of the Timer’? Try the ‘Timeboxing’ technique to accelerate your learning:

Slice it: Don’t just write ‘Study English’. Be specific: ‘Finish reading this financial report’.

Limit it: Estimate it needs 30 minutes? Give yourself just 25 minutes.

Timer on: Start the timer. For these 25 minutes, put your phone face down. Zero distractions.

Stop: When the alarm rings, stop immediately. This creates a psychological tension in the brain (the Zeigarnik Effect), making you more eager to start next time.

I invite you to try this today: Compress a task, like replying to emails or a study session, that usually takes an hour into just 40 minutes!

👇 Drop a comment below: Which task are you going to challenge with the timer today?

`#Shíjiān’de diàopèi, shì xuéxí yǐndǎo zhōng yīgè hěn hǎo yòng de gōngjù!

Qián zhènzǐ yǒu wèi qǐyè zhǔ céng wènguò Amy gùwèn: Míngmíng shì měitiān wǔ fēnzhōng jiù kěyǐ wánchéng de shì, wèishéme dà bùfèn de tóngshì dōu yào tuō dào zuìhòu cái wánchéng?

Zhè kěnéng shì #pà jīnsēn dìnglǜ (Parkinson’s Law) zài zuòsuì:

‘Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.’
‘Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.’ Gōngzuò huì zìdòng péngzhàng, zhídào zhàn mǎn suǒyǒu kěyòng de shíjiān.

Zài tuánduì xuéxí yǔyán huò dǎorù xīn jìnéng shí, wǒmen cháng fàn yīgè cuòwù:`Wǒ yào zhǎo yīgè zhōumò, shū shūfú fúde dú 4 xiǎoshí de shū.’`Nǐ zhǐyào zài yītiān 8 xiǎoshí zhī zhōng, zhǎo chū wǔ fēnzhōng lái liànxí shǐyòng AI fāwén.’

Duìyú qǐyè ér yán, shíjiān shì zuì guì de zīyuán, ér zài AI shìdài, zhuānzhù lì zuìwéi xīquē.

Kuānsōng de shíjiān = dànǎo jìnrù `shěng diàn móshì’, zhuānzhù lì huànsàn, róngyì bèi gānrǎo, fēn xīn.
Shìdù de shíjiān yālì néng pòshǐ dànǎo jìnrù `gāo rènzhī pín kuān’zhuàngtài. Dāng dànǎo yìshí dào zīyuán (shíjiān) xīquē shí, huì zìdòng guòlǜ zá xùn, yōuxiān chǔlǐ héxīn zīxùn.

Yīncǐ Amy gùwèn zài zuò xuéxí yǐndǎo shí, xūyào suíshí shàn yòng `shíjiān gǎn, sùdù gǎn’de yìshù, chuàngzào `rénzào wéijī gǎn'(Artificial #Urgency).

(The Power of the Timer)?

Rúhé yùnyòng `jìshí qì de lìliàng'(The Power of the Timer)?
Kěyǐ shì shìkàn `shíjiān hé'(Timeboxing) jìqiǎo lái tíshēng xuéxí sùdù:

    1. Qiēgē rènwù (Slice it): Bié xiě `dú yīngwén’, yào xiě `dú wán zhè piān cáijīng bàodǎo’.
    2. Shèdìng jíxiàn (Limit it): Pínggū xūyào 30 fēnzhōng? Nà jiù zhǐ jǐ zìjǐ 25 fēnzhōng.
    3. Qǐdòng jìshí (Timer on): Àn xià jìshí qì. Zhè 25 fēnzhōng nèi, shǒujī fān miàn, jùjué gānrǎo.
    4. Tíngshǒu (Stop): Língshēng yī xiǎng, lìkè tíngshǒu. Zhèhuì zài dànǎo zhōng chuàngzào yīzhǒng `wèi wánchéng de zhānglì'(Zeigarnik Effect), ràng nǐ xià cì kāishǐ shí gèng xīngfèn.
