Why do children stop asking questions?
During a recent parent-child Learning Facilitation session, we discovered that while first-graders are already excellent at expressing themselves, they rarely ask questions!
Does your child dislike asking questions? Perhaps it’s because you are answering too quickly.
Consultant Amy believes that in Asian culture, ‘Questioning’ is a Metacognitive Skill that needs to be deliberately trained.
From Amy’s observation, what often kills curiosity is adults who are too eager to provide standard answers.
Do you want to raise children capable of independent thinking? Try the #CorpusLearnToLearn Questioning Facilitation exercise:
1️⃣ Create a Sense of Security: Actively admit ‘I don’t know.’
When a child asks a question that stumps you, don’t feel embarrassed.
❌ NG Reaction: Giving a random answer or saying, ‘You’ll understand when you grow up.’
✅ Facilitated Reaction: ‘Wow! That is a fantastic question. Even I don’t know the answer. Shall we be detectives and investigate together?’
Let your child see that learning is a lifelong journey and…
‘Admitting ignorance is the beginning of exploration.’ — Amy Tsai, Corpus Learning Facilitator
2️⃣ Practise Transformation:
Explore deeper. Guide the child to transform closed Yes/No questions into more profound open-ended questions.
🔸 Level 1: ‘Are dinosaurs extinct?’ (Yes/No)
🔸 Level 2: ‘If dinosaurs lived today, what would the world look like?’ (Open-ended)
3️⃣ The Art of Catching the Ball:
Resist giving the answer! This is the hardest step!
When a child asks, ‘Why is the sky blue?’, please fight the urge to Google or ask ChatGPT immediately!
Try the Bounce Back Method:
– Validate: You are observing very carefully!
– Redirect: Before we check the answer, what is your hypothesis? (What is your guess?)
– Co-learn: Your hypothesis is interesting. Let’s verify it together.
💡 Corpus Amy’s Insight:
To teach children how to ask questions, parents must first learn to delay the gratification of giving answers and learn to ‘ask back’.
Because the process of questioning and hypothesising stimulates curiosity and deep thinking far more than a correct answer found online ever could.
🥣 Today’s Dinner Challenge: Try playing a game of ‘Question Chain’ with your child:
Pick a topic. Both sides can only ask questions; you cannot give answers. See how long you can keep it going!
