First seminar of a german Master’s degree: the professor asks, ‘Are you using AI?’
German higher education, much like the UK system, relies heavily on Self-Directed Learning.
A few days ago, during the first Seminar, after everyone had introduced themselves, the professor’s very first question was: ‘Is anyone here using NotebookLM?’
The students fell silent, afraid to admit it…
The professor then spent a considerable amount of time seriously explaining the importance of AI in academic presentations and self-study. He guided the students through a hands-on practical session and even dedicated time for a Q&A.
In this generation, students no longer need to remain silent! AI can serve as a research assistant for every academic researcher!!
In my #EnglishforAcademicPurposes course, I focus on: #AcademicResearchTechniques, #AcademicWriting, and clear #Presentation skills.
I believe that the use of AI, combined with your own research capabilities and critical thinking, is the only way to handle the demanding workload of studying abroad with ease.
Here, we can apply the three steps of the Corpus Learn-to-Learn Framework to master academic literature:
T Pretest: Use AI to quickly scan for knowledge gaps. Ask the AI to test you!
T Self-Teach: Utilise AI tools (such as NotebookLM, Gemini or ChatGPT) to summarise literature, engage in dialogue, clarify logic and accelerate understanding.
Note: Simultaneously keep another window open to search and verify the authenticity of the data.
T Posttest: Finally, ask the AI to suggest a few relevant topics worth exploring. Synthesise the information yourself to produce your own insights. Then, ask the AI for feedback. This is also the perfect stage to bring your work back to the ‘real world’ and seek feedback from professors and classmates.
I do hope that every student going abroad will become an Independent Learner and an Independent Thinker!
