Xī bān yá hé tái wān de zhì ān

Safety when Travelling to Spain and to Taiwan
When you travel to Spain, you would probably be worried about your property walking on the street. Many people say that thieves are rampant there, and most people won’t even know that they are robbed until much later. Actually, it’s not that bad! Our Corpus cultural observer used to walk around Madrid with a backpack, and she was never robbed, even when she walked on the street in the middle of the night. She provides some advice for those who are traveling to Spain:
- Try not to look like a tourist. Then it will be less likely for you to be a target.
- Cash should be stored separately in your bag and the luggage. Never expose your money.
- Always keep an eye out. Don’t phub. (Europeans rarely phub.)
- When going out at night, avoid areas where street crime is high, such as the city center.
Compared to Spain, Taiwan is relatively safe. You won’t be robbed even when you leave your backpack unzipped. When you return home, all of your items will still be safe and sound. Once, our Corpus cultural observer forgot her notebook in a restaurant, and when she went back to look for it, her laptop was still there! (Just FYI – this is not a recommended behavior.)
However, when walking on the street in Taiwan, you should probably pay attention to the cars on the road instead. In Spain, drivers will always wait for pedestrians to cross the road. Drivers in Taiwan seldom do that. They will either approach the intersection in a slow but menacing way, or pass straight away without waiting. Crossing a street in Taiwan is definitely not a pleasant experience! You might not need to worry about pickpocketing in Taiwan, but you must always stop to watch the cars before you cross the street!
