Cultivating Cultural Connections: Amy Tsai’s Journey with Corpus Mandarin
Cultivating Cultural Connections: Amy Tsai’s Journey with Corpus Mandarin
As the founder of Corpus Mandarin, Amy’s mission to facilitate cross-cultural connections through language learning has taken her from London to Taiwan and now to Singapore. In this exclusive interview, Amy shares insights into her inspiration, the expansion of Corpus Mandarin and her vision for the future.
Q: What inspired you to establish Corpus Mandarin, and how do you plan to contribute to the educational landscape in Singapore?
Amy: My experiences teaching Mandarin Chinese to Singaporean expat families in London ignited my passion for cultural exchange through language education. Establishing Corpus Mandarin was a natural step to bridge cultural divides. In Singapore, we aim to offer tailored language programmes that not only focus on linguistic proficiency but also foster a deep appreciation for cultural understanding, empowering learners to thrive in our interconnected world.
Q: Could you share your personal experiences in bridging cultural divides, particularly in relation to your journey from Taipei to London, and now to Singapore?
Amy: Certainly. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and later relocating to London at the age of 18, I immersed myself in the vibrant tapestry of a global metropolis. Teaching Chinese Mandarin became not only a profession but a means to preserve my own ethnic identity and convey my distinct cultural perspective to students from diverse backgrounds.
My time teaching beloved Singaporean and Malaysian expat families in London left a profound impression on me, as I witnessed their unwavering commitment to Chinese Mandarin education. Moreover, I found fascination in the subtle dialectal variances among Taiwanese, Beijing, and Singaporean Mandarin, which deepened my understanding of the cultural nuances shaping the language. These experiences have laid a robust foundation for me to approach Mandarin Chinese education in Singapore with a unique perspective, one that celebrates the rich diversity inherent in Mandarin’s regional expressions and grammatical structures.
