Empowering ESL/EAL Students for Academic Writing Success in Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore

ESL (English as a Second Language) students often excel in reading comprehension, vocabulary building and grammar exercises. However, the crucial skill of academic writing can sometimes be left behind, especially in countries like Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. This gap becomes evident when students prepare for university entrance in English-speaking countries. Despite years of learning English, many Asian students feel unprepared for the challenges of research, formal writing style and structuring their ideas effectively.
The recent webinar, ‘Tips for Academic Writing Success’, organised by National Geographic Learning ELT and presented by Singapore-based educators Don Clyde Bhasy and Derek Mackrell, served as a timely reminder. Developing academic writing skills is a gradual process that requires consistent practice. The webinar highlighted the importance of guiding students through the entire writing process, from analysing prompts and generating ideas to structuring arguments, conducting research and presenting different perspectives.
The good news is that even students with lower levels of English can benefit from early exposure to academic writing fundamentals. At Corpus International Education, we believe in integrating these skills into our English potential development courses, even at the primary and junior high school levels. Instead of solely relying on pre-prepared resources, we will be incorporating practical webquest activities and relevant research skills training into our curriculum.
As Don Clyde Bhasy concluded, mastering academic writing goes beyond university preparation. It fosters critical thinking processes, clear self-expression and research skills – valuable tools that benefit students throughout their lives.
Insights from the Q&A Session:
The webinar also offered a valuable Q&A session. Here are some key takeaways from my questions:
- Adapting to Different Writing Styles: My EAP (English for Academic Purposes) classes consist of students with strong IELTS/TOEFL scores and holding offers from universities with diverse academic writing styles (British vs. American systems, science vs. humanities faculties). Derek emphasised that while catering to specific university guidelines is helpful, the core focus should remain on clarity of organisation, language accuracy and the quality of research and ideas.
- Incorporating Authentic Materials: I also inquired about using authentic academic journals in my EAP classes, reflecting the expectations of my students transitioning to higher education. Derek agreed on this approach but only for students with a C1-C2 English proficiency level. Fortunately, the average IELTS score in my class is 7.0, making the use of authentic materials feasible.
- Navigating AI in Academia: A shared concern among participants was the potential misuse of AI writing tools. The speakers acknowledged the potential of AI for brainstorming. However, the speakers emphasised the importance of teaching students both the benefits of structured research and writing processes and the ethical considerations surrounding plagiarism and AI-generated content.

前幾天又參與了一場由國家地理 NationalGeographicLearning 舉辦的網路教學研討會,研討會演講者是位在新加坡的教師培訓專家兼教材作者:Don Clyde Bhasy 和 Derek Mackrell。

1️⃣ 專注於核心技能:雖然迎合特定的文化風格可能對印象分有幫助(例如英式 vs 美式英語,文科 vs 理科的寫作習慣等等),但講者Derek 也強調了打好基礎的重要性,不管到哪一國就讀,學生還是要有學術寫作中 – 清晰表達、準確的用字與語法和研究技能。
1️⃣ Zhuānzhù yú héxīn jìnéng: Suīrán yínghé tèdìng de wénhuà fēnggé kěnéng duì yìnxiàng fēn yǒu bāngzhù (lìrú yīng shì vs měishì yīngyǔ, wénkē vs lǐkē de xiězuò xíguàn děng děng), dàn jiǎng zhě Derek yě qiángdiàole dǎ hǎo jīchǔ de zhòngyào xìng, bùguǎn dào nǎ yī guó jiùdú, xuéshēng huán shì yào yǒu xuéshù xiězuò zhōng – qīngxī biǎodá, zhǔnquè de yòng zì yǔ yǔfǎ hé yánjiū jìnéng.
2️⃣ 為高級學習者提供真實材料:對於英語能力達到 C1-C2 級別的學生,講者也同意使用真實的學術期刊會很有幫助!幸好Amy Tsai 顧問的 EAP學生的平均雅思成績落在 7.0,因此使用真實材料是可行的。
所以Amy Tsai 顧問堅持要EAP學生必須利用學術期刊支持他們研究作文的論點,這種方法可以讓學生更順暢地接軌國外的大學、碩博士課程。
2️⃣ Wèi gāojí xuéxí zhě tígōng zhēnshí cáiliào: Duìyú yīngyǔ nénglì dádào C1-C2 jíbié de xuéshēng, jiǎng zhě yě tóngyì shǐyòng zhēnshí de xuéshù qíkān huì hěn yǒu bāngzhù! Xìnghǎo Amy Tsai gùwèn de EAP xuéshēng de píngjūn yǎsī chéngjī luò zài 7.0, Yīncǐ shǐyòng zhēnshí cáiliào shì kěxíng de.

3️⃣ 學術界對於使用AI的感受? 這題是必問的吧!講者建議:AI工具可以用在一開頭的點子發想,但倫理考量在學術界還是至上。 演講者強調了我們還是要教導學生如何系統化地進行研究、寫作過程以及如何避免使用AI生成內容,不然到最後有抄襲嫌疑就得不償失了。
3️⃣ Xuéshù jiè duìyú shǐyòng AI de gǎnshòu? Zhè tí shì bì wèn de ba! Jiǎng zhě jiànyì:AI gōngjù kěyǐ yòng zài yī kāitóu de diǎn zǐ fā xiǎng, dàn lúnlǐ kǎoliáng zài xuéshù jiè háishì zhìshàng.
