The Human Touch in a Tech-Driven Future: Takeaways from ELTOC 2024 #MyELTOC
By Amy Tsai, Bilingual Consultant, Corpus International Education Pte Ltd.
The future classroom – will technology replace teachers entirely? This hot-button topic sparked a lively discussion during the ‘Technology and Creativity: Preparing Yourself for the Future Classroom’ talk by James Taylor at ELTOC 2024, a conference organised by Oxford University Press and Teaching English with Oxford. While catching up on the wealth of insights offered across the 9 talks proved a challenge due to time differences, the energy and shared purpose of the 3,000+ English teachers attending virtually was truly inspiring.
James’ talk resonated deeply with my own experiences working with bilingual learners and recent conversations with clients. His central message – that education remains a fundamentally human process – echoes the sentiments expressed by Dr. P. L. and Alex, two of my clients.
Why Robots Won’t Replace Human Teachers (Just Yet)
Dr. P-C. Lee highlighted the difficulty robots would face in comprehensively addressing students’ emotional and cognitive needs. She values my ability to tailor content and feedback that caters not just to her communication skills but also her need for emotional support. Similarly, Alex emphasised the limitations of translation tools in capturing the nuances of language, like sarcasm, cultural understanding and unspoken cues. He sees the human element – fostering lifelong learning experiences and fostering communication that transcends cultural or linguistic barriers – as irreplaceable.
Adding Value in a Tech-Infused Age
James’ talk went beyond simply reassuring us that robots won’t steal our jobs. He offered concrete strategies for ESL/ELT educators to enhance our value and collaborate effectively with technology:
- Prioritise Learning: Not all students come to class with the same level of motivation. It’s crucial to demonstrate our human touch, ignite their curiosity, and inspire them to reach their full potential. Effective teaching goes beyond just the final product; it’s about facilitating the learning process itself. Teachers who merely go through the motions, without fostering interaction and engagement, are the ones most likely to be replaced by technology.
- Cultivate Your Personal Brilliance: Lifelong learning and self-development are essential. As educators, we embody a blend of linguistics, psychology, pedagogy, political awareness and cultural understanding. We shape the future, and nurturing our own curiosity, creativity as well as problem-solving skills is a vital part of the job.
- Embrace Technology as a Partner: Strategic use of technology can free up valuable time. Referencing a World Economic Forum article (https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/05/ai-accelerate-students-holistic-development-teaching-fulfilling/), James highlighted the potential for AI to reduce teachers’ workloads by 20-30%, particularly in repetitive tasks like marking papers.
The Q&A session offered another interesting perspective. When asked if physical books would be entirely replaced by e-books, James drew an analogy to his own love for vinyl records. He argues that personal preferences and interests will ensure physical books remain relevant, just like vinyl continues to have a devoted following despite the abundance of streaming services. (As a fellow vinyl collector, I find this perspective particularly relatable!)
The future classroom will undoubtedly embrace technology, but James’ insights offer a reassuring reminder: the human element in education remains irreplaceable. Our ability to connect with students, inspire curiosity and tailor learning experiences will continue to shape future generations.

Zài ELTOC 2024 dàhuì shàng,James Taylor de `kējì yǔ chuàngyì: Wèi wèilái kètáng zuò hǎo zhǔnbèi’de yǎnjiǎng zhōng, tǎolùn de shì yīgè rèmén huàtí——wèilái kètáng, kējì huì wánquán qǔdài lǎoshī ma?
Zuìjìn Amy gùwèn gēn xuéyuánmen xiànshàng xiàn xià liáotiān de shíhòu, zuì cháng liáo de yěshì jiàoyù kējì shì bùshì huì qǔdài yǔyán jiàoxué zhège chǎnyè, yǐxià shì Amy gùwèn zhěnglǐ qǐlái jǐ gè jīqìrén (mùqián) wúfǎ qǔdài Corpus lǎoshī de yuányīn:
