Exam Success for Bilingual Learners: Takeaways from the ELTOC Conference #MyELTOC

ELTOC 2024 offered a treasure trove of insights for educators like myself! While time differences meant I could only catch 4 live talks out of the 9 offered, the energy and shared purpose of over 3,000 English teachers from around the world was truly inspiring.
One of the most impactful talks, ‘Empower Your Students for Exam Success’, delivered by Susan Liu from Oxford University Press and Teaching English with Oxford, resonated deeply with my experience working with bilingual learners in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.
The Bilingual Challenge: Proficiency and Exam Success
Many parents I meet express a desire for a bilingual pedagogy that optimises their children’s academic performance in both languages, without sacrificing their love for learning. But how do we bridge the gap between fostering a love for language and equipping students with the necessary exam skills?
A Holistic Approach to Exam Preparation
Susan Liu’s talk emphasised that exam success goes beyond just cognitive skills and memorisation techniques. While ‘direct strategies’ like structured reviewing and understanding task formats are crucial, she highlighted the importance of nurturing ‘indirect strategies’ that focus on:
- Metacognition: Equipping students with self-awareness and planning skills. The concept of the ‘Objective Pyramid’ was introduced, prompting students to set clear goals, define success metrics, and develop actionable steps to achieve them.
- Emotional Strength: Incorporating positive journalling exercises in class allows students to track their progress and celebrate achievements, fostering a sense of accomplishment and boosting motivation.
Direct Strategies for Exam Success:
- Spaced Repetition: Leveraging the power of the memory curve, Susan Liu recommends intensive revision shortly after learning new concepts, followed by spaced-out reviews closer to the exam date.
- Task Analysis: Equipping students with a deep understanding of different question types and step-by-step strategies to tackle them effectively.
- Focus on Core Topics: While exploring diverse topics can be fun, prioritising mainstream themes like education, environment and work ensures students develop adaptable answer construction skills that can be applied across various contexts.
The blend of direct and indirect exam preparation strategies presented by Susan Liu offers a well-rounded approach that I’m eager to implement with my bilingual learners! I hope equipping them with not only the cognitive tools but also the emotional and self-evaluation skills will empower them to approach exams with confidence and achieve their academic goals.

Xǔduō jiāzhǎng dōu xīwàng háizi zài liǎng zhǒng yǔyán de huánjìng zhōng dōu néng qǔdé yōuyì de chéngjī, tóngshí yě néng bǎochí duì xuéxí de rè’ài. Dàn rúhé zài péiyǎng yǔyán xīng qù hé bāngzhù xuéshēng zhǎngwò kǎoshì jìqiǎo zhī jiān zhǎodào pínghéng ne?
全方位備考方法
Quán fāngwèi bèikǎo fāngfǎ
Susan Liu 老師強調,考試成功不僅僅在於認知技能和記憶技巧。 雖然像結構化複習和理解題型等的「直接策略」很重要,但培養「間接策略」也同樣重要。
Susan Liu lǎoshī qiángdiào, kǎoshì chénggōng bùjǐn jǐn zàiyú rènzhī jìnéng hé jìyì jìqiǎo. Suīrán xiàng jiégòu huà fùxí hé lǐjiě tí xíng děng de `zhíjiē cèlüè’hěn zhòngyào, dàn péiyǎng `jiànjiē cèlüè’yě tóngyàng zhòngyào.
「間接策略」策略著重於:
`Jiànjiē cèlüè’cèlüè zhuózhòng yú:
1. 後設認知:幫助學生提升自我認知和計畫的能力。如「目標金字塔」的圖像,鼓勵學生設定清晰的目標,定義成功的標準,再制定可操作的步驟來實現目標。
1. Hòu shè rènzhī: Bāngzhù xuéshēng tíshēng zìwǒ rènzhī hé jì huà de nénglì. Rú `mùbiāo jīnzìtǎ’de tú xiàng, gǔlì xuéshēng shèdìng qīngxī de mùbiāo, dìngyì chénggōng de biāozhǔn, zài zhìdìng kě cāozuò de bùzhòu lái shíxiàn mùbiāo.
2. 情緒管理:課堂上加入正向的日記練習,可以讓學生追蹤自己的進步並慶祝成就,從而培養成就感和提高學習動力。
2. Qíngxù guǎnlǐ: Kètáng shàng jiārù zhèng xiàng de rìjì liànxí, kěyǐ ràng xuéshēng zhuīzōng zìjǐ de jìnbù bìng qìngzhù chéngjiù, cóng’ér péiyǎng chéngjiù gǎn hé tígāo xuéxí dònglì.
直接備考策略:
Zhíjiē bèikǎo cèlüè:
1. 間隔式重複:利用記憶曲線的力量,Susan Liu 老師建議在學習新知識後就馬上做密集複習,然後隨著考試日期的臨近,逐漸拉長複習的間隔。
1. Jiàngé shì chóngfù: Lìyòng jìyì qūxiàn de lìliàng,Susan Liu lǎoshī jiànyì zài xuéxí xīn zhīshì hòu jiù mǎshàng zuò mìjí fùxí, ránhòu suízhe kǎoshì rìqí de línjìn, zhújiàn lā cháng fùxí de jiàngé.
2. 任務分析:幫助學生深入理解不同題型,並訓練他們逐步的解題策略。
2. Rènwù fēnxī: Bāngzhù xuéshēng shēnrù lǐjiě bùtóng tí xíng, bìng xùnliàn tāmen zhúbù de jiětí cèlüè.
3. 專注練習核心主題:雖然探索多元的主題也很重要,但優先選擇教育、環境和工作等主流的主題方向,可以確保學生發展答題技巧,創造出來的答案也比較能廣泛應用在各種不同但相似的題目上。
3. Zhuānzhù liànxí héxīn zhǔtí: Suīrán tànsuǒ duōyuán de zhǔtí yě hěn zhòngyào, dàn yōuxiān xuǎnzé jiàoyù, huánjìng hé gōngzuò děng zhǔliú de zhǔtí fāngxiàng, kěyǐ quèbǎo xuéshēng fāzhǎn dátí jìqiǎo, chuàngzào chūlái de dá’àn yě bǐjiào néng guǎngfàn yìngyòng zài gèzhǒng bùtóng dàn xiāngsì de tímù shàng.
