Tái wān de chuán tǒng cài shì chǎng

Taiwanese Traditional Markets
Traditional market is a place where Taiwanese local culture is still preserved, a place you should visit if you wish to understand authentic Taiwanese lifestyle. It is primarily a place that gathers vendors to sell vegetable, meat and groceries. Most of the produce and food are grown, cultivated and homemade by the vendors, so people are able to buy the freshest and seasonal food here, which cannot be competed and is completely different from the modern supermarkets and stores. Many older generations or housewives still go to traditional markets every morning to buy fresh ingredients to cook at home, but most young people nowadays eat out and they are relatively unfamiliar with traditional markets.
I often visit some of the famous markets in the UK during holidays. I found that they are similar to the traditional markets in Taiwan. However, for me, the biggest difference between the two places is the warmth and friendliness. In order to catch customer’s attention, many vendors have their own distinctive slogans and sometimes even cause a trend on the Internet. The sounds of peddling from vendors and bargaining from housewives fill the markets, which is a representation of the hardworking nature of Taiwanese people and a strong connection of local community. Additionally, the most special feature is that some of the outdoor traditional markets allow people to enter by scooter, serving as a drive thru for customer to buy as they go, which is very convenient.
